Given the tendency of many food producers to solve the problems of excess consumption by portion controlled packaging, it would be interesting to see if this works in general, not just with a can of coke. While portion control is often effective for people managing their weight at home, the question is whether this effectiveness is due to the person being actively involved in thinking about the calories. If this is the case, then offering a person something smaller to consume will probably work.

Otherwise, two cans of coke will go into the lunch bag...

I was recently speaking with someone about how we are influenced by visual cues, ala Brian Wansink, Mindless Eating and our brain's desire to finish the WHOLE thing. I agree this is a step in a helpful dierection. Next maybe we can start to notice internal cues of how drinking any amount of soda feels. If it works for your body, maybe it's a keeper, and if not here's hoping the sound of your own body awareness drowns out the imagined benefits.

Just a clarification on these mini cans from a fellow dietitian and consultant to the Coca-Cola company: They were indeed presented and offered at the Coca-Cola booth #831 in the Expo Hall at the ADA FNCE 09 in Denver. A huge iced cooler of them sat right next to the other choices at the Coca-Cola booth. So dietitians had every opportunity to see and taste them. Regardless of my affiliation with Coca-Cola, I happen to think portion-controlled food/beverage choices are an extremely useful tool for some people looking to better manage their calories.
One more thing about "great steps". When your house is on fire, do you get out one step at a time or do you run like hell?
First steps and baby steps don't work now that our kids are sicker and fatter than ever. It's time to run like hell.....far away from soda. As a matter of fact, run to the water fountain!

This is not the first time that Coca cola has rolled out smaller cans. A few years back when the WHO made recommendations about refined sugar, teeny tiny soda cans appeared on the shelves for a while.
Smaller cans won't help obesity any more than light cigarettes decreased cancer incidence. History continues to repeat itself.
